Who are Australasian Fleet Management Association (AFMA)?

The Australasian Fleet Management Association (AfMA) is the peak industry body representing around 550 members across Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia.

AfMA’s primary goal is to promote fleet management as a true vocation. It does this through on-going professional development forums, an annual fleet conference & exhibition and through its relationship with Swinburne University (Graduate Certificate in Business Management (Fleet Management) and a soon to be released Diploma of Leadership & Management contextualised for fleet management). AfMA also provides a range of tools for its members, such as the Fleet Management Guide, and is an advocate for fleet management and thereby provides fleet managers with a voice on matters affecting industry.

What does road safety mean to Australasian Fleet Management Association?

With a membership base responsible for around 800,000 assets, representing light and heavy fleet in addition to other auxiliary equipment such as motor bikes and yellow plant, for AfMA’s members safety is at the heart of any successful fleet management system. For AfMA’s membrers, the fleet manager is at the coal face because they are responsbile for providing their organisation with the necessary transport tools which allows their workers to safely deliver their services.

To support its members AfMA produced the Safer Motoring Guide many years ago and continues to advocate for safety for all road users. AfMA connects safety specialists/experts with fleet managers through its professional development forums and annual conference & exhibition in addition to recognising best practice at its annual awards night.

How is Australasian Fleet Management Association contributing to road safety of its workers and the community it operates in?

Fleet management is a complex function and safety is a fundamental building block. Selecting a fit-for-purpose vehicle isn’t straight forward, there are always competing needs, such as its requirement to carry certain payloads (people and or products), minimise vehicle emissions, provide high levels of safety whilst being cost effective.

Selecting the safest fit-for-purpose vehicles is just the start of the journey. Organisations need to develop many policies to guide the safe use of these vehicles and develop a safety culture that support a safe mobile workplace.

To support its members AfMA produced the Safer Motoring Guide many years ago and continues to advocate for safety for all road users. AfMA connects safety specialists/experts with fleet managers through its professional development forums, annual conference & exhibition as well as recognising best practice at our annual awards night.

AfMA has been a program partner of NRSPP since September 2016 and has actively participated in various working groups including: –

    • Safe Use of Mobiles in Vehicles (SUMV) Working Group
    • Grey Fleet Working Group, and
    • Suicide in Road Transport Prevention Working Group

Other initiatives include approaching AfMA’s fleet safety award winners to feature in NRSPP Case Study’s to assist these successful organisations transfer knowledge to others.

Collaboration is key to AfMA’s success of connecting people with knowledge to create outcomes. Tangible examples include Jerome Carslake delivering educational sessions at AfMA annual conference and exhibition in 2018 and again in 2019. These conferences had over 400 people attended and provided the perfect opportunity to educate fleet professionals and other stakeholders on the importance of road safety. The topics delivered were: –

    • Workshop exploring what can fleets do to support reducing the nations road trauma and how government assist them
    • An interactive Conversation on the Realities of Grey Fleet Management

At AfMA’s Professional Development Forum in March 2021 Jerome Carslake facilitated a discussion on “Identifying road safety elements – it’s all within the control of an individual company!” with nearly 40 attendees. A key point emerged from the forum was that the heart of safety and how it is approached in any organisation, is its culture and how it functions and is valued throughout. The forum was also used to road test what elements are most important for fleet managers to assist NRSPP in prioritising its next projects.

In 2018, AfMA participated as a stakeholder in the development of a guide to Developing a Safe Mobile Workplace. This work was completed by several state based Worksafe authorities and released in 2019. AfMA subsequently developed two online safety courses to distil the 50-page guide into manageable pieces.

What are the opportunities AfMA’s can bring to the leadership of NRSPP?

We continue to demonstrate leadership and importantly provide a conduit for knowledge transfer by connecting people with knowledge to create meaningful outcomes.

Beyond safety, AfMA is an active participate in the decarbonisation of fleets whilst at the same time assisting organisations to reduce their operational costs. AfMA has demonstrated our ability to assist organisations to meet their triple bottom line being their social, environmental (or ecological) and financial goals.

AfMA supports NRSPP’s Empowr’s philosophy, that everyone deserves access to safe, affordable vehicles. It’s safer for the driver, and safer for everyone on our roads.

As part of AfMA’s commitment to becoming a steering committee member, AfMA will work with NRSPP to help organisations understand how they can meet their corporate social responsibility by participating in Empowr initiatives.

Further, AfMA will lead the way by providing 100 free licenses for drivers participating in various Empowr initiatives to complete our towards zero learning path which incorporates Understanding ANCAP Safety Ratings and Understanding Vehicle Safety Features.
