The National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP), delivered in partnership with the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), is honoured to have received a 2021 Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.

The NRSPP was initially launched by HRH Prince Michael of Kent on the 5 May in 2014 in Melbourne as part of the Decade of Action Policy and Donor Forum.

In his letter to the NRSPP’s Independent Chair, Professor Barry Watson, HRH Prince Michael of Kent recalled the launch and noted his delight in being able to present the NRSPP with his award in recognition of its innovation and outstanding achievements in improving workplace road safety.

The HRH Prince Michael of Kent noted the importance of the NRSPP in its efforts to ensure the safe use of vehicles by those who drive for work purposes and the sharing of good practice through creating partnerships across industry, government and the academic sectors.

Independent Chair, Professor Barry Watson said “Since the NRSPP’s launch, the program has grown significantly and has had thousands of organisations and individuals draw on its resources especially over the past 12 months since its partnership commenced with Monash University. The power of the program is the diversity of our partners and their recognition that road safety is not a competitive advantage but a shared advantage.”

The many activities of the NRSPP are supported through its Core Funders which consist of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, Transport for NSW, NSW State Insurance Regulatory Authority, Queensland Transport and Main Roads, Victorian Transport Accident Commission and WA Road Safety Commission.

The program is guided by an industry-led Steering Committee and has a partnership base exceeding 130 industry and government organisations across public and private sectors. Over the last six years, the NRSPP has developed and disseminated hundreds of evidence-based resources designed to enhance workplace road safety. The development of these resources has occurred in collaboration with the NRSPP’s many partners and relied heavily on the skills of Communication and Design interns from Swinburne University Bureau.

The delivery and impact of the NRSPP would not have been possible without the partnership with MUARC and through its collaboration with the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety – Queensland, the Swinburne University Bureau, Griffith University, and Flinders University.

“I would like to acknowledge Program Director Jerome Carslake for leading NRSPP since its inception and to the many program partners, especially our foundation ones, organisations, businesses and other stakeholders who have contributed to its success,” said Independent Chair Professor Barry Watson.

“The NRSPP’s future is looking very exciting, with the membership of our Steering Committee having recently been renewed and a major impact evaluation of the program completed. With the recognition provided by the Prince Michael award, the program looks forward to making a significant contribution to the forthcoming National Road Safety Strategy and the second Decade of Action for Road Safety.”

The NRSPP acknowledges its industry Steering Committee partners Australian Fleet Management Association, Australian Automobile Association, BHP, Commonwealth Bank, Essential Energy, IAG, Innovation Group, JESI, Monash Accident Research Centre, National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, Transport for NSW, NSW Government State Insurance Regulatory Authority, Queensland Government, RioTinto, Government of Western Australia Road Safety Commission, Safe System Solutions, Toll Group, Transport Accident Commission, UnitingCare Queensland, Vero, Suncorp/Vero, VIVA Energy Australia and Zurich Insurance.
