The past 18 months have been tough for everyone. Now, perhaps, we have a summer holiday period where we can get out and explore. Based on record recent sales of caravans, camper trailers and RVs, however, it seems we won’t be alone.
But hitting the road for the holidays is not as simple as hitching up and heading off. It’s important to be trip ready. NRSPP is urging everybody to apply the same principles an organisation does to its workers when they drive for work, and consider safety first.
So, what do you need to do to be trip ready?
The NRSPP asked industry experts to share their safety advice for those of you heading out this summer. Three – the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia’s Wylva Hall, Cameron Wearing from the Australian Driving Institute, and Michael Green from Pedders Suspension and Brakes – will also join us for an NRSPP webinar on November 18.
In the meantime, here briefly are some of their top safety tips:
- Service your caravan, just as you service your everyday car. It’s likely been sitting idle for a long time, especially if you live in Victoria or NSW. Tyres can degrade and become worn out simply from not being used; they may also need time to warm up after long periods of non-use because a tyre’s shape can become flattened over time.
- Be aware of the common factors that cause trailers to swerve. The main causes include wind shear, incorrect hand placement on the steering wheel, and overloading your car. Prevention is better than cure, but if you notice any swaying, Cameron Wearing suggests easing off the accelerator immediately.
- Remember, everything adds weight to your vehicle or what it’s towing, from your children to your bull bar to your sleeping bag. Weight check services are available so there is no excuse for being overweight.
- Consider a towing course if it’s your first time towing a caravan. Wylva Hall also recommends using the RV Safe Checklist App before you leave to help maximise your safety on the road.
