Austroads has commissioned the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) to update the 2005 National Guidelines for the Provision of Rest Area Facilities.

The objective of the project is to ensure that national guidelines used by road transport agencies to design and build heavy vehicle rest areas provide optimum support to the management of heavy vehicle driver fatigue as well as other factors, to reduce the number of fatigue-related accidents as much as possible.

As part of the process of updating the guidelines, a Heavy Vehicle Rest Areas survey has been commissioned which seeks to obtain input from industry relative to the following key areas:

  1. Vehicle separation in rest areas
  2. Rest area facilities
  3. Information on rest areas (including advanced notice)
  4. Rest area spacing

Furthermore, the survey allows for any additional thoughts/comments related to rest areas not covered in the themes above.

The survey will take no more than 5 minutes to complete and the results will ensure input from the industry is included in the updated guidelines.

The closing date of the survey is 9/2/18.

The survey can be found here.
