Between 1997-2002, there were 74 deaths attributed to collisions between trains and motor vehicles at Australian level crossings.

Though representing less than 1% of the national road toll in the same period, these deaths constitute a significant proportion of the Australian rail toll.

Of all road crash types, those between motor vehicles and trains are amongst the most severe and 3 times more likely to involve fatalities.
