Emeritus Professor Ian Johnston
2014 – 2017
Dr Ian Johnston has worked in the safety field (especially transport safety) since 1966 and his experience spans all modes. He has been a researcher, policy analyst, program administrator, senior executive and non-executive board member across a range of transport modes and settings with the Australian and Victorian governments, with a national R&D company and in academia. He has a special interest in how societies, governments and organisations think about and manage safety and in the translation of research results into policy and practice. He was Director of MUARC from 2001-2006 and an Adjunct Professor to the end of 2016. Ian is the independent chair of the National Road Safety Partnership Program and of the Victorian injury data working group and is the independent expert on the Tasmanian Road Safety Council. In addition, he served for six years as a non-executive Director (Deputy Chair) on the Board of the National Transport Commission, was a member of Australia’s inaugural National Road Safety Council for the three years of its existence, served as a non-executive Director on the Board of the Driver Education Centre of Australia Ltd for many years, and is an adviser to the Independent Council on Road Safety International.

Emeritus Professor Barry Watson
2018 – 2021
Emeritus Professor Barry Watson is a global road safety expert based at the Centre for Accident Research & Road Safety – Queensland (CARRS-Q), Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Barry has over 35 years’ experience in the road safety field working for government, academic and civil society organisations. As a founding member of CARRS-Q, he was involved in the development and delivery of courses in road safety and traffic psychology for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as leading research teams examining a range of road user safety issues. From 2008 and 2015, he was the Director of CARRS-Q and responsible for the overall operation of the Centre. Between 2015 and 2017, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), which is hosted by the Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Geneva, Switzerland. As the CEO of GRSP, Barry was responsible for the overall strategic direction of the organisation as well as the management of its activities in over 35 countries worldwide.

Emeritus Professor Jude Charlton
2022 – current
Dr Jude Charlton is Professor Emeritus at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) and former Director of MUARC and its World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Injury Prevention. As current Independent Chair of the National Road Safety Partnership Program, she takes an active interest systems safety research, professional training and best practice that promotes a positive road safety culture in the workplace. Jude has led a sustained program of research for more than two decades on older people’s safe mobility, child safety in cars and medical fitness to drive that has been influential in shaping positive changes in safety policy, design and practice in Australia and internationally. Jude has authored over 200 publications on road safety issues and has served on many road safety expert advisory groups, including the U.S. Transportation Research Board – Driver Medical Review and Co-Chair of Aging Gender and Mobility Sub-committees; the Technical Working Group for NHMRC ‘National Best Practice Guidelines on the safe restraint of children travelling in cars’; and the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Road Safety and the
International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
