New Release: Driving for Work Light Vehicle Toolbox Talk
Road crashes are the most common cause of work-related death, injury, and absence from work in Australia [1].
In 2022, 141 (72% of the annual total) workers died in Australia in crashes involving at least one vehicle. This represents an increase compared with the previous year, when the reported number was 117 (68% of the 2021 total) [2].
Driving is one of the riskiest activities undertaken as part of work. Records show the associated death risk for driving 40,000km per year is 1 in 8,000, similar to mining (1 in 7,500 people) and higher than construction (1 in 10,000 people) [3]. A recent survey across the country recorded 68% of commuters travel by car to work and 62% do it every day [4]. Given the over-representation of work-related vehicle crashes within Australia, driving for work is an area of road safety that requires urgent attention.
