Abstract
Within a fleet strategy framework, an organisation must address four key elements;
• Why they manage a fleet
• What standards they aspire to
• How they deliver their business services
• The tools used to do so.
This session will look at the overall issues of implementing a ‘safe fleet’ strategy focusing on passenger and light commercial assets.
Responsible fleet operators always strive to deliver the safest mobile workplace for their workers. Often, at the top of the priority list, is the development of fleet specifications that focus on the inclusion of the highest levels of both passive and active safety features.
However, it’s not sufficient to simply mandate the inclusion of vehicle safety features in a complex business environment. Beyond ‘safety’, fleet purchasing decisions must be filtered through a series of effectiveness, affordability and sustainability assessments. Decisions on the uptake of new technologies (notably active safety and vehicle telematics) must also be cognisant of external market influences, internal culture, driver education, training and management.
Jerome and Tim will provide insights into the development of a vehicle strategy beyond a checklist of vehicle essentials, including a safe systems approach to fleet safety, relevant policies, potential operational and cultural roadblocks. They will also explore where misconceptions and barriers may emerge when the system based approach in an organisation breaks down and silos reign.

Tim Roberts
With over 25 years of experience in the fleet management industry, Tim has worked in operational, senior management and peak industry governance positions, including fifteen years as a director and shareholder in a successful national fleet management business. For over twenty years, Tim has also been a board member of the Australasian Fleet Management Association (AfMA) serving seven terms as National President. Tim’s knowledge is in demand, and he has been engaged by numerous private and public sector organisations as a subject matter expert, fleet strategist and event facilitator.
Jerome Carslake
Jerome Carslake is the Professional Leader of the National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP). Jerome has extensive knowledge in workplace road safety management, program delivery and the collaborative development of solutions, such as the NRSPP Austroads collaborative Suicide in Road Transport Project, Grey Fleet leadership, Safe Use of Mobiles in Vehicles, and Utilities Forum, to name a few. Jerome has also worked as consultant and senior policy adviser within the agricultural and renewable sectors and their related supply chains.
