The NZ Chapter of the Australasian College of Road Safety welcomes members to a presentation on the Speed Management Guide – Road to Zero Edition, which will be released for use in the coming weeks. The Speed Management Guide empowers and supports regional transport committees and road controlling authorities to plan for and implement safe speeds.
The guide represents a new phase in the approach to speed management in New Zealand, superseding the first edition of the guide from 2016. It draws together into a single planning framework the legislation for setting speed limits, the main elements of New Zealand’s road safety strategy Road to Zero, New Zealand’s sustainability action plan Toitū te Taiao, and the One Network Framework, which is a movement and place based national classification program for streets and roads.
The result is a principles-based approach to setting speed limits and managing speeds. The intended outcome is safe speeds that save lives and avoid serious injuries, whilst contributing to wider societal benefits such as improved accessibility, physical activity rates and environmental outcomes.
