Managing steep descents

Steep descents are a recognised hazard in road transport,
safely driving a truck down a steep descent requires preparation, awareness and the right skill levels. NTARC has collaborated with industry partners to make several videos providing practical guidance for truck drivers across various challenging descents in Australia. Whether you are new to driving heavy vehicles or experienced on Australia’s difficult mountainous roads, these videos will help you stay confident, safe and in control to get down safe, every time.

There is a range of knowledge and skills which a driver should have to best equip them to guide a heavy vehicle down a steep descent. These resources are intended to support drivers and driver trainers to acquire and refresh that knowledge.

LOCATION SPECIFIC RESOURCES

Located in north eastern Victoria around 60km east of Wodonga on the Murray Valley highway, the Koetong to Bullioh descent is a key connector for agricultural and forestry activities in the Corryong Valley.

The Hyland Highway is a key north-south connector route, linking the South Gippsland towns of Yarram in the south with Traralgon and Morwell in the North. However to traverse this link, you need to cross Powers Hill.

The key eastern approach to Adelaide, descending the Adelaide Hills from Crafers to Glen Osmond, the South-Eastern Freeway descent is arguably the highest-profile descent in Australia.
