Central to the Safe System approach is the notion of sharing responsibility for road safety outcomes between the individual road users who must comply with rules, standards and guidelines and the “system designers” who influence not only the way the transport system is built and maintained, but also the way it is used. ISO 39001 provides support for any organisation to contribute to improving the safety of the users of the road transport system and to reaching the long term goal of eliminating death and serious injury from the system.
