What does road safety mean to Toll?
The safety of staff, contractors and the communities in which it operates is Toll’s priority, always. As the largest professional road user in Australia, Toll aspires to a leadership role in helping to make our roads safer. That, couple with its core value of safety, has seen it make road safety its group-wide corporate responsibility focus.
Toll is strongly committed to raising awareness and increasing education around road safety, with two major sponsorship initiatives. Since 2013 Toll has partnered with Australia’s leading cycling advocacy group, the Amy Gillett Foundation, and in 2016 Toll also became the major National sponsor for Australia’s iconic community road safety initiative, Driver Reviver.

- In 2014, Toll NQX General Manager Greg Smith produced NRSPP’s first webinar: Toll NQX Talks Heavy Vehicle Safety.
- The webinar was rebroadcast by Safe Work Australia as part of 2014 Safe Work Month, Road Transport Case Study Part 2
- Toll Group, through Greg Smith, was part of the symposium on “How organisations are minimising work-related vehicle crashes and their consequences” was recorded at ARSC2015. It featured 7 NRSPP partner organisations exploring their approach to this question and the consequences internally and externally.
- At the 13th NRSPP Steering Committee meeting, 2016, Dr Sarah Jones presented on Toll Group’s fatigue management and experience
- In 2016, Dr Sarah Jones joined NRSPP to present the webinar Fresh thinking on a tired subject: Toll’s new driver fatigue management standard
- The webinar was rebroadcast by Safe Work Australia as part of the 2017 Safe Work Month.
- Toll Group’s, Dr Sarah Jones, joined the NRSPP for its symposium at the Australasian Road Safety Conference (ARSC) 2018 “Towards Zero: Making it Happen!” held in Sydney. The was symposium titled:
- “The workplace, why does road safety management vary so much?” which was proudly sponsored by the NSW State Insurance Regulator Authority.
- At the 16th NRSPP Steering Committee Meeting, 2018, Dr Sarah Jones presented on their research of analysis 10 years of incident data involving Toll Group. The result of the presentation was the formation of the Suicide in Road Transport National Working Group.
- Toll Group attended the 2018 foundation workshop of the Suicide in Road Transport and has continued to share their data and interventions to progress this National Working Group.
- Dr Sarah Jones won NRSPP’s Best Paper with Implications for Improving Workplace Road Safety at ARSC2018 for her paper On-road and driver fatalities at Toll Group: what data reveals about risk and opportunity in our pursuit of zero. The prize included:
- To illustrate the leadership and approach to sharing the responsibility of road safety, Toll Group shared Chain of Responsibility – A guide for Toll’s Customers and Clients
- In 2021, Toll Group has assisted NRSPP in establishing the Heavy Vehicle Tool Box Talk Working Group.

Toll Group is recognised as one of the Founding Partners of NRSPP with Shane Falkiner kindly helping design and build the foundational elements of the program during its establishment phase.
Shane was an incredibly passionate contributor. A quiet contributor who everyone listened to intently when he shared his valuable insights.
Shane attended the formal launch of NRSPP as part of the third UN Decade of Action gathering in Melbourne at the RACV club. The program was formally launched by Prince Michael of Kent on the 5 May and featured as part of the starting of meeting.

In 2017, NRSPP held the inception co-design workshop for Suicide in Road Transport (SiRT) which Nestlé attended and actively contributed to. Nestlé has continued as a partner of the SiRT National Working Group since it was started.
Nestlé has continued to contribute to SiRT which is now in stage 2 with a major national project funded by Austroads and being delivered collaboratively by NRSPP.
