    Safe Work Australia

    Safe Work Australia leads the development of national policy to improve work health and safety and workers’ compensation arrangements across Australia.

    Safe Work Australia works to:

    – coordinate and develop national policy and strategies
    – assist with the implementation of model work health and safety legislation and reform the legislative framework
    – undertake research, and
    – collect, analyse and report data.

    As a national policy body Safe Work Australia does not regulate work health and safety laws. The Commonwealth, states and territories retain responsibility for regulating and enforcing work health and safety laws in their jurisdiction.

    SafeWork SA

    SafeWork SA is South Australia’s occupational health, safety and welfare (OHS) agency. Our primary role is to promote and encourage safe, fair and productive working lives in South Australia by working with employers, employees, unions and industry representatives.

    SafeWork SA is responsible for administering industrial relations (IR) legislation* and managing all OHS functions in our state.

    A State Government agency, SafeWork SA delivers improved OHS and IR outcomes through:

    – Communication – raise awareness of the identified, relevant and targeted group
    – Engagement – gain commitment from everyone
    – Education – develop knowledge, understanding and skills, and foster quality education and training
    – Intervention – ensure compliance and assist industry
    – Evaluation – monitor and assess for ongoing improvement

    Victorian WorkCover Authority

    Broadly, the responsibilities of VWA are to:

    – help avoid workplace injuries occurring
    – enforce Victoria’s occupational health and safety laws
    – provide reasonably priced workplace injury insurance for employers

    – manage the workers’ compensation scheme by ensuring the prompt delivery of appropriate services and adopting prudent financial practices.

    WorkCover Queensland is a statutory body which provides and manages workers’ compensation insurance for Queensland employers and their workers. WorkCover Queensland is self-funding and operates as an independent, commercial enterprise even though they are owned by the Queensland Government.

    WorkCover Queensland is the main provider of workers’ compensation insurance in Queensland.

    WorkCover - Tasmania

    WorkCover is an independent body with responsibilities under the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 and Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995.

    WorkCover Tasmania works with Tasmanian employers, workers, insurers, doctors and others to reduce work-related injury and illness in Tasmania and aid the early return to work of injured workers.

    To achieve this, WorkCover:
    • promotes prompt and effective injury management
    • promotes safer and healthier workplaces, through providing health and safety information and practical guidance, and
    • manages the workers’ compensation scheme and monitor the performance of scheme participants.

    WorkSafe - ACT

    WorkSafe ACT was created on 3 May 2010 to replace ACT Workcover. WorkSafe ACT’s role is to enforce the Territory’s health and safety and workers’ compensation laws through a mixture of education and compliance activities.

    WorkSafe ACT is a business unit with the ACT Justice and Community Safety Directorate’s Office of Regulatory Services. Mark McCabe, the head of WorkSafe ACT has a dual role as Work Safety Commissioner for the ACT and as Senior Director, WorkSafe ACT.

    WorkSafe - NT

    NT WorkSafe is the administrative and regulatory arm of the Northern Territory Work Health Authority, the statutory body continued under Part 2 of the Work Health Administration Act 2011.

    NT WorkSafe is responsible for the Territory-wide regulation of workplace health and safety, dangerous goods, electrical safety, and rehabilitation and workers’ compensation.

    NT WorkSafe works with Territory businesses and workers by:

    – setting the safety standards to ensure that businesses and workers meet their responsibilities under the law;
    – explaining and interpreting laws and standards and by providing businesses and workers with guidance materials; and
    – helping businesses and workers meet their responsibilities through workplace visits, advice, audits and inspections.

    WorkSafe - WA

    WorkSafe is the Western Australian Government agency responsible for the administration of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984. It is a division of the Department of Commerce.

    WorkSafe aims to reduce workplace fatalities and injury and disease rates in accordance with national targets, by:

    – reducing high incidence/severity risks
    – improving the capacity of business operators and workers to manage occupational safety and health effectively
    – preventing occupational disease more effectively
    – eliminating hazards at the design stage, and
    – strengthening the capacity of government to influence occupational safety and health outcomes.
